History: In the wake of multiple destructive hurricanes on August 29th 2008, developed an immediate emergency relief response to aid the needs of the thousands of storm survivors in the Les Cayes region. As an immediate action, staff bought local recycled 5-gallon vegetable oil buckets in Les Cayes and filled them with all the survival supplies available for local purchase. Each bucket was assembled for a family (5 people on average) with emergency relief supplies including; blankets, personal sanitation kits, candles, matches, water purification tablets, and fortified dry meals. These buckets were then quickly distributed to secure distribution locations where the families in the greatest need could be identified. also worked hard to better equip healthcare centers with medical supplies through airlifts that provided immediate assistance to locations cut off from road access. has now included this response effort as a part of our on-going programs. Survival buckets are assembled by volunteers in Haiti throughout the year and storing them for distribution in the case of an emergency. ’s goal is to have 1,000 buckets always prepared for immediate distribution.

Objective: To provide a short-term, immediate response to emergency situations including but not limited to floods, fires, famine, and other severe acts of nature and politics. Limited to ’s geographical location.

How does ’s response provide families with relief in time of crisis?

Survival buckets are provided to families who have suffered the greatest from a natural or political disaster. The 5-gallon bucket provides a family with the basic survival supplies needed to get through the hardest days and weeks after an emergency. Everything, including the bucket is a local product purchased in Les Cayes, with the exception of the fortified dried food all of which has been generously donated by Kids Against Hunger of Southwest Florida. Each product within the bucket has a practical and immediate use to keep a family healthy after an emergency. The bucket itself provides a family with an important tool to purify water, wash clothes, store and protect food, remove excess water, etc… After witnessing the horrific effects of rising food prices in April of 2009, followed by a deadly hurricane season, knows that this small gesture can mean everything to a family who has lost everything overnight.

How can you help a family in need?
  • For $100 you can help respond to a disaster by sponsoring a Survival Bucket for a family in need.
  • A donation of any amount can help families survive in the aftermath of a disaster.

Emergency Medical Response

History: has established a small program to respond to emergency medical cases needing financial assistance. For a typical Haitian family, living day to day is a constant challenge, leaving no resources available to respond to emergencies, especially medical emergencies. For nearly 20 years, has witnessed the terrible tragedies of families losing loved ones due to not having the appropriate resources to receive proper medical assistance. Far too often, the medical procedure needed to save a life can be less than US$500, but for a Haitian family that amount is impossible to provide. In cases of medical emergencies, works with families and individuals to help them receive the immediate medical assistance they need.

Objective: To provide immediate assistance to emergency medical cases for the poorest of the poor.

Why does believe that emergency medical response is so important?

strongly believes that no one should die from a medical emergency when help can be provided. We consider it to be a grave tragedy when a life that can be saved is lost due to abject poverty. Families are forced to accept death as the only option when no resources are available. Many times these medical emergencies are relatively basic cases, that with small resources, miracles can be provided.

How can you help save a life?
