When you meet Solange Jean Baptiste, her determination shines brighter than any hardship she has faced.
Born in Fond des Blancs, a rural community in the Sud Department of Haiti, Solange grew up as one of 13 children in a family struggling with poverty. For many years, going to school seemed impossible. But thanks to her ambition and the support of a caring godmother, Solange became the only child in her family to complete high school—a remarkable achievement that marked the beginning of her journey.
Today, Solange is in her third year of nursing studies at Université Lumière, with graduation right around the corner. To help cover transportation costs, she sells goods to fellow students, showing the same resilience and determination that carried her through her early years. When her godmother could no longer continue paying her tuition, Solange turned to Hope for Haiti, where she was accepted into our Scholarship Program.
With the support of Hope for Haiti, Solange is close to achieving her dream of becoming a nurse. But her vision doesn’t stop there. She dreams of one day opening a large orphanage to care for malnourished children and provide them with the education she once feared she would never have. “I know what it means to live with limited opportunity,” she said. “I don’t want any child to go through what I went through.”
Solange’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformational impact of education. With perseverance and support, a student like Solange can not only change her own future, but also lift up her family and community for generations to come.
