Healthcare is a central part of Hope for Haiti’s holistic approach to poverty alleviation. By providing wound care, chronic illness management, health education, and preventative screenings, our Healthcare team empowers children, parents, and grandparents to lead healthier lives without having to choose between buying medicine and food.

Infirmary St. Etienne
Located in Les Cayes, Haiti, our Infirmary St. Etienne provides primary care, chronic illness management, cancer screenings, medication, and referrals as needed. Our team of Haitian healthcare professionals provides everything from wound care to vaccination to dental care and empowers patients to live healthier lives by providing comprehensive health education.
Mobile Clinics
Our mobile clinic team travels to rural communities throughout the Sud Department to provide primary and dental care to some of the most vulnerable populations, sometimes even providing the first patient consultation a resident ever receives.
Public Health Education and Nutrition
Hope for Haiti collaborates with Community Health Workers who administer health lessons for our more than 7,000 students in partner schools, as well as adults in these communities, to help control and prevent the spread of sickness and diseases. Our Nutrition team also works with parents whose children are at risk of being malnourished to help them reach developmental goals.
Disease Prevention & Awareness
At both our Infirmary St. Etienne and mobile clinics, our healthcare professionals provide screenings for breast and cervical cancer, leading to more successful outcomes than a late-stage diagnosis and enabling women to be proactive about their health. Through screenings like these and our health education initiatives, our team works to empower residents of the Sud Department to be safer and healthier.
More About Our Work In Healthcare
What This Program Does
Hope for Haiti’s Healthcare Program strengthens access to essential medical services for families in southern Haiti. The program supports clinics and community health initiatives that provide preventive care, maternal and child health services, screenings, vaccinations, and treatment for common illnesses. By employing talented Haitian healthcare professionals and local partners, Hope for Haiti helps expand access to quality care in underserved communities. These efforts focus on strengthening primary healthcare systems so that families can receive treatment close to home.
Why It Matters in Haiti
Access to healthcare remains extremely limited across much of Haiti, particularly in rural areas. The country has approximately 0.28 physicians per 1,000 people, far below levels seen in neighboring countries and global standards for adequate healthcare coverage (Frontiers.org). At the same time, over 60% of rural communities have limited or no nearby health services, forcing many families to travel long distances or go without care entirely (Ecreee.org). Haiti also faces some of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in the Western Hemisphere, with many preventable illnesses becoming life-threatening due to lack of medical infrastructure and resources (USAID.org). Strengthening community-based healthcare services is essential to improving survival rates, preventing disease, and building a healthier future for Haitian families.
How It Works
Hope for Haiti partners with local healthcare providers and community organizations to expand access to care in southern Haiti. The program focuses on strengthening healthcare systems through several key approaches: Supporting local clinics and healthcare facilities with medical equipment, supplies, and operational resources; Providing preventive care and screenings, including maternal health services and early detection of diseases; Expanding community health outreach, helping families access basic medical care and health education closer to their communities; Improving access to essential medicines and treatments for common illnesses and chronic conditions; Strengthening health infrastructure and training, ensuring Haitian healthcare workers have the tools and support they need to serve their communities.
