Dear Hope for Haiti Family:
Helping patients and healthcare providers access medication and medical supplies is a vital part of Hope for Haiti’s work. Over the past 5 years, with the support of our U.S. donors, we have procured, imported, and distributed more than $160 million in high-value medication and medical supplies and distributed throughout southern Haiti to those serving on the front lines in the global fight to ensure healthy lives and promote well being for people of all ages.
The demand for medication and medical supplies in Haiti has never been greater or more urgently needed. The UN has reported that Haiti’s healthcare infrastructure in Port au Prince is nearing collapse, with gangs controlling 80% of the area, shortages of healthcare staff, and critical shortages of supplies. Country-wide, we are seeing reports of healthcare facilities having mere days left of lifesaving medications, especially for those suffering from chronic illnesses.
More than one million patients in southern Haiti have access to healthcare as a result of our program to improve access to medication, which provides healthcare professionals across the region with the resources they need to keep families healthy. Despite the challenges the country currently faces, our partners continue to serve thousands of patients in their communities each day and we are blessed to play a part in that.
Last month, our team successfully collaborated with partners to transport $34 million worth of lifesaving medication and supplies donated by CMMB, MAP International, and Americares to more than 18 partners so far, bypassing the dangers of Port-au-Prince. Just last week, our team was able to successfully bring down over $130,000 worth of insulin and diabetes supplies donated by Insulin for Life that’s already being distributed to diabetes patients at our Infirmary St. Etienne. You can watch the journey of this shipment, from New York to Les Cayes, in the video below:
Because of your support of Hope for Haiti, we are able to ensure that communities across southern Haiti have access to life-saving medications. You can read our full long-term response plan to the current crisis here.
