From Patient to Graduate: How Hope for Haiti’s Scholarship Program Helped Judelie Achieve Her Dream

By November 19, 2025No Comments

Turning Struggle into Strength

When 23-year-old Judelie Charles first visited Hope for Haiti’s Infirmary St. Etienne in Les Cayes, she was seeking treatment for diabetes. But behind her diagnosis was a deeper story of loss, hardship, and perseverance.

After losing both parents and her older sister, Judelie and her brother—who works as a moto taxi driver—were left to support each other. Despite the financial burden, Judelie’s determination led her to finish high school and begin nursing school. But tuition in Haiti is costly, and before long, she realized she might have to abandon her dream.

At the same time, her health declined and depression set in. That’s when Judelie found Hope for Haiti.

Finding Healing and Hope

Through her care at the Infirmary St. Etienne, Judelie began managing her diabetes and joined Hope for Haiti’s Diabetes Club—a supportive community of people who meet each month to share encouragement and resources.

During one of these meetings, the Hope for Haiti team learned about Judelie’s financial struggles and her passion for nursing. They encouraged her to apply for the Hope for Haiti Scholarship Program, which helps promising students continue their education despite financial barriers.

Judelie applied—and was selected as one of twenty new recipients that year.

“Illness and stress were my daily life until I met Hope for Haiti,” Judelie said. “I went to the Hope for Haiti clinic for treatment, but I found more than that. In addition to medical support and unconditional love, I found a college scholarship to pursue my dream.”

A Dream Realized

Over the next few years, Judelie’s health improved, her confidence grew, and her studies flourished. Supported by the scholarship program—and the ongoing care of Hope for Haiti’s healthcare team—she was able to complete her degree.

In September 2025, Judelie proudly graduated from nursing school. For her, the moment represented more than just a diploma—it was proof that perseverance, compassion, and community can transform lives.

“My wellness is for the most part due to this scholarship that gives hope for a better tomorrow,” Judelie shared.

Now, Judelie looks forward to using her nursing degree to serve others in her community, paying forward the kindness and support she received.
