Better Sanitation = Better Health

Dear Hope for Haiti Family,

We are so grateful for your being part of the Hope for Haiti family. It’s through the support of advocates like you that our organization can continue working toward our vision for Haiti: joyful children, healthy families, thriving communities, and the resources to make it so.

Here are the latest updates from our team.

Sanitation Supplies Arrive in Southern Haiti

Our Gift-In-Kind team in Les Cayes recently received a large shipment of hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes. These sanitary items will be distributed to partner organizations to aid in the prevention of communicable illnesses like cholera. Thank you to our partners MAP International, CMMB, and Americares for providing this very important donation for our public health initiatives!

Celebrating International Day of Education

January 24th is recognized worldwide as the International Day of Education – a day proclaimed in celebration of the role of education in peace and development. At Hope for Haiti, we know that education is a human right, and one of the best tools we have in the eradication of poverty. With YOUR support, Hope for Haiti programs support more than 6,000 students in southern Haiti.

Our Education Program team recently distributed 5,500 textbooks in English, French, and Kreyol to students in our 21 partner schools. Watch Hope for Haiti’s Education Program Director, Jean Ronald Jocelyn, talk about this project below.

Plus, Jean Ronald and Hope for Haiti’s Education Program Coordinator, Etienne Pierre Louis, recently filmed a segment on the Haiti-based digital media platform Chokarellato discuss our organization’s education program and the impact we’ve made with YOUR support.

Hope for Haiti Receives Grant from Prevent Cancer Foundation

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in Haiti, yet sufficient screening is not widely available. We’re honored to have received a two-year $150,000 grant, which will provide 34,000 free cervical and breast cancer screenings, as well as funding for bi-annual education campaigns and training for 35 nurses and 45 community health workers to reduce mortality and morbidity rates in southern Haiti. Our Team’s Day of Service for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Did you know that MLK Day is the only U.S. federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage volunteering to improve communities? To recognize Dr. King’s work and legacy, many of our team members and their families used Volunteer Time Off (VTO) to make a positive impact in their communities by feeding neighbors or community members experiencing homelessness and/or food insecurity, volunteering in schools, and helping out in animal shelters and sanctuaries. Plus, many of our Haiti team members volunteered earlier this month by making and sharing soup joumou with community members on Haitian Independence Day.

Started in 2019, the Hike for Haiti provides an opportunity for the global Hope for Haiti community to come together to hike in solidarity with children and families in Haiti who walk great distances to access healthcare, clean water, and an education. Registration is open for individuals, groups, and companies, and opportunities to attend in-person activations in Los Angeles and New York City are coming soon. Register here.
