In the aftermath of Hurricane Tomas, Hope for Haiti has mobilized its resources to address the needs of those affected by the storm. Partnering with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Hope for Haiti secured humanitarian aid in the form of kitchen and hygiene kits, tarps, blankets, water purification supplies, mosquito nets, and Hope for Haiti’s own Survival Buckets. By utilizing our vast network of program partners in the Southern Department, Hope for Haiti was able to quickly perform needs assessments in storm-affected areas.

In addition, Hope for Haiti continues to attend coordination meetings hosted by the Ministry of Planning and Coordination (MPCE) of the Southern Department and attended by local and international NGOs, including: IOM, FAO, CRS, Caritas, MINUSTAH, UN Civil Affairs, UNICEF and OCHA. The organizations present at the meetings divided into teams and took responsibility for specific areas to conduct needs assessments. On November 4th, field staff from Hope for Haiti, the MINUSTAH Human Rights Office, the UN Office of Civil Affairs, FAO, and IOM traveled to the communities of Aquin, Cavaillon, and Boileau to evaluate Tomas’ effects first-hand and meet with the town Mayors about the level of destruction and the capacity of shelters in each location.

As the storm subsided on November 5th, Hope for Haiti was able to send much needed humanitarian aid to Aquin, an area that had sustained substantial flooding and wind damage during the hurricane. On November 6th, Hope for Haiti also addressed needs in Cavaillon by delivering Survival Buckets, blankets, hygiene kits, tarps, water purification supplies, and kitchen kits to the Sisters of Notre Dame du Bon Secours for distribution to families in need. Communication with our program partners is comprehensive and ongoing, and over the next few days we will be distributing humanitarian aid to the communities of St. Hélène, La Savane, Brodequin, Morency, Tête Source, Ravine Sable, and Torbeck. In collaboration with our key partner, IOM, and our local program partners, Hope for Haiti has been able to respond quickly and effectively to the destruction of Hurricane Tomas. We sincerely thank everyone for their ongoing support!
