With five weeks off before training camp opens, Jaguars defensive tackle Marcell Dareus is bound for the Caribbean to reconnect with his late father’s homeland — Haiti.
On Wednesday, he will see the groundbreaking and dedication of a three-classroom wing that will be named after him at the Christ-Roi Primary School of Cammy. He was scheduled to arrive in Haiti on Monday and will be welcomed by Haiti’s Prime Minister, Jack Guy Lafontant.
“It means the world to me to have an opportunity where I can help out, give a little back,” Dareus said last week. “I can’t change the world, but I can change a life.”
It is the second consecutive offseason that Dareus, 28, has traveled to Haiti. Last year, he met more than 800 children and was struck by the emotions he saw.
Through the Dareus Foundation, he donated $25,000 to the U.S.-based charity, Hope for Haiti. And he’s expected to make another significant donation this week to the charity that serves as an implementing partner for school construction, teacher training, teacher salary subsidies, mobile clinics and back-to-school support for students.
