A hurricane warning is in effect for Jamaica, Haiti, and the Cuban provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguin, Granma and Las Tunas — as well as the southeastern Bahamas. A hurricane watch is in effect for the Cuban province of Camaguey, the Turks and Caicos Islands and Central Bahamas. In Naples, Hope for Haiti officials said the charitable organization is mobilizing preparedness efforts in advance of Hurricane Matthew with a team of more than 45 Haitian and three international staff members headquartered in Les Cayes, a coastal city in southwestern Haiti.
Hope for Haiti officials said the organization regularly maintains a stock of over 1,000 emergency buckets containing supplies for a family to use in the immediate aftermath of an emergency. The buckets contain life-saving supplies including water purification tablets, matches, candles, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and nutrient rich meal packets that can feed a family of five for at least five days. The bucket is used to store supplies, purify water, and/or assist in cleaning out a house after a flood.
