Soup, Textbooks, and 12,000+ Patient Consultations

The new year is off to an exciting and inspiring start! Below, we’re thrilled to share news about our team’s soup joumou distribution, a large textbook order purchased in-country, as well as our December healthcare numbers. Thank YOU for helping make this work possible!

Celebrating Haitian Independence Day with Soup Joumou

To celebrate Haitian Independence Day on January 1, members of the Hope for Haiti team volunteered their time to prepare and serve soup joumou to more than 1,400 people. Soup joumou has been a symbol of hope and dignity since Haiti’s independence in 1804. It has become a tradition to share this culturally iconic soup with those who may not have it, so that everyone can celebrate and enjoy the holiday together.

This year, our team brought soup joumou to community members, residents of an elderly home, patients at the general hospital, and inmates at the prison in Les Cayes. One of the team’s favorite moments from the weekend was meeting a man who asked for two servings of soup so he could bring one to his brother at the prison. When Hope for Haiti’s Dental Director, Dr. Esperance, assured him that everyone at the prison was also receiving soup that day, he was overcome with relief.

Students at our partner schools are starting the new year with new books! Through funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, we purchased 5,500 textbooks from Maison Henri Deschamps in Port-au-Prince and Les Editions Dawill in Les Cayes to equip students with the core subject textbooks they need to make the school year successful, including math, science, Kreyol, and French reading and comprehension. You can help support our education projects here.

December Healthcare Recap

The numbers are in. The Hope for Haiti Healthcare team conducted 12,225 patient consultations last month at our Infirmary St. Etienne and mobile clinics – which averages out to about 450+ per day we were open in December!

From nutrition and wound care to disease testing and prevention, our clinics provide people in 24 partner communities of southern Haiti with necessary dental and healthcare. Support healthcare here.
