World Diabetes Day & More Updates

Dear Hope for Haiti Family,

In honor of World Diabetes Day on Tuesday, November 14, Hope for Haiti is hosting a community walk, which will conclude at the Infirmary St. Etienne, where several activities will be held. The public is invited to walk with team members, members of our Diabetes Club, and dedicated advocates to help raise awareness and decrease the stigma surrounding diabetes.

A century after its discovery, insulin and other fundamental components of diabetes care remain beyond the reach of millions who need them. Hope for Haiti’s annual community walk and event on World Diabetes Day is an expression of solidarity and support for those living with diabetes, and aims to increase public access to diabetes screening and medication as needed. According to the International Diabetes Federation, 1 in 2 people with diabetes either cannot afford or simply cannot access insulin to manage their disease.

Thank you to the Cliff Avril Family Foundation for its support of this year’s event, and to Insulin for Life for its recent gift of insulin to our Infirmary St. Etienne and additional testing supplies for next week’s event.

Book Distribution in the Rural South

Update from Education Program Director, Jean Ronald Jocelyn:

After our recent teacher training focused on reading and comprehension, the Education team is hard at work distributing over 6,800 textbooks to 1st-6th graders in our partner schools to help improve their reading and writing skills. Unfortunately, most of these students could not afford these textbooks otherwise. We are also installing mobile libraries in 2 additional schools so the students have extra books to practice reading.

The kids are very happy with their new books and their teachers believe this will help improve the students’ reading skills. Click here to watch a student testimonial video!
